China Transportation Guide — High-Speed Trains, Flights, Metro & More

Complete China transportation guide: how to book high-speed trains, domestic flights, metro navigation, buses, taxis & ride-hailing. Essential travel tips for foreign tourists.

China has one of the world's most advanced transportation networks. From 350 km/h high-speed trains to metro systems in every major city, getting around is incredibly efficient. This guide covers everything you need to know.

🚄 High-Speed Trains & Railways

  • China's high-speed rail network is the world's largest, connecting virtually all major cities. Beijing to Shanghai takes just 4.5 hours, Beijing to Xi'an 4.5 hours, Shanghai to Hangzhou under 1 hour.
  • How to book: Via the 12306 official website/app (English version available), or at train station counters. Book 1-2 weeks in advance, especially during holidays. We can assist with ticket booking.
  • Seat classes: Second Class (affordable), First Class (more spacious), Business Class (lie-flat seats, similar to business class on planes).
  • Regular trains: Budget-friendly option with hard seat, hard sleeper, and soft sleeper. Overnight trains save on accommodation costs.

✈️ Domestic Flights

  • Major airlines: Air China, China Eastern, China Southern, Hainan Airlines. Covering 200+ cities.
  • Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chengdu are the main hubs. Beijing to Chengdu is about 3 hours, to Kunming about 3.5 hours.
  • Book through airline websites or Trip.com (English version). Note baggage allowance — typically 20kg for domestic flights.

🚇 Metro & Public Buses

  • 40+ Chinese cities have metro systems. Beijing and Shanghai have the world's largest networks, covering all major attractions.
  • Fares: Typically 2-10 RMB (about $0.3-$1.5). Pay via Alipay/WeChat QR code, single-journey tickets, or transport cards.
  • Buses: Cover every corner of cities, 1-2 RMB per ride. Most support QR code payment.
  • Navigation: Download Amap (Gaode Maps) or Baidu Maps app (English version available) for real-time transit navigation.

🚕 Taxis & Ride-Hailing

  • Taxis: Starting fare around 10-14 RMB (varies by city). Use the Didi Chuxing app — similar to Uber, with English interface available.
  • Ride-hailing: Didi covers the entire country. Link your international credit card to use it.
  • Tip: Avoid unlicensed "black taxis" at airports/stations. Our guides can arrange airport transfers for you.

💡 Practical Tips

  • Download offline maps: Google Maps has limited functionality in China. Use Amap or Baidu Maps instead.
  • ID requirements: Passport is required for train/flight bookings. Bring your original passport for boarding.
  • Peak hours: Rush hours (7:30-9:00 AM, 5:00-7:00 PM) see crowded metros. Plan accordingly.
  • All our tours include comprehensive transportation arrangements — you won't need to worry about any transit details.
