Zhangjiajie: The Real Avatar Mountains

Zhangjiajie (张家界) is home to the towering sandstone pillars that inspired James Cameron's floating Hallelujah Mountains in Avatar. The landscape is surreal — over 3,000 narrow quartzite sandstone pillars rise up to 200 meters from misty valleys. It's one of China's most dramatic natural landscapes and a must-visit for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

The park is the main attraction — spread across 130 km² of pillars, ravines, caves, and forests. The Avatar Hallelujah Mountain (formerly South Sky Column) is the pillar officially renamed after the film. Getting around: The park has a free shuttle bus system. Key elevators: Bailong Elevator (the world's tallest outdoor elevator, 326m) and the Bailong Sky Walk. The Zhangjiajie guided tour includes the best routes and skip-the-line elevator passes.

张家界玻璃桥 (Glass Bridge)

The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge is the world's longest and highest glass-bottomed bridge — 430m long, 300m above the canyon floor. Walking across it is exhilarating (and terrifying). Book tickets online in advance — they sell out quickly in peak season.

Tianmen Mountain

Tianmen Mountain (天门山) features the world's longest cable car ride (7,500m) to the summit. Highlights include the 99 Bends Road (a winding mountain road with 99 hairpin turns), the Cliff-Hanging Walkway (glass path bolted to a sheer cliff face), and Tianmen Cave — a natural arch 130m high that gives the mountain its name ("Heaven's Gate").

Best Time to Visit

April-June and September-November offer the best visibility. The pillars look most dramatic in misty or overcast conditions — so even rainy days can be magical. Avoid Chinese Golden Week (Oct 1-7) when the park is extremely crowded.

Getting There

Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport (DYG) receives flights from major Chinese cities. By train: 4-5 hours from Changsha (the nearest major city). By car: 5-6 hours from Changsha. The park entrance is about 30 minutes from Zhangjiajie city center.
