What's Blocked in China?
The Great Firewall blocks many Western services: Google (Gmail, Maps, Search), WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter/X, YouTube, Netflix, and more.
VPN (Essential)
Download a VPN before arriving in China. Recommended: ExpressVPN, Astrill, or NordVPN. Free VPNs rarely work in China. Connect before you land — once in China, VPN apps may be harder to download.
SIM Card
Buy a local SIM at the airport (China Mobile or China Unicom). Data plans: ~$15-$30 for 30 days with 10-30GB data. You'll need your passport to register.
WiFi
Hotels, cafes, and restaurants offer free WiFi. High-speed in hotels, variable elsewhere. Metro stations have free WiFi in major cities.
Stay Connected Without VPN
These apps work in China without VPN: Alipay, WeChat, Didi, Trip.com, Baidu Maps, Apple Maps (works well), and international hotel booking apps.
